• Assault/Domestic Violence: Assault and battery is always a serious charge, especially when the accuser is a family member or intimate partner. A first conviction for domestic violence is a misdemeanor (unless there is a weapon or other aggravating factor), while a second or subsequent case is prosecuted as a felony.
• Drug Charges: Possession of any controlled substance, including marijuana, is illegal in Oklahoma. Drug charges are commonly based on the amount of a controlled substance involved. • Gun Charges: Oklahoma citizens may have a Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms. But that does not mean anyone can possess a gun. For example, it is against state and federal law for many convicted felons to possess a firearm. And if a gun is used to commit another crime, such as robbery, that leads to elevated criminal charges.
• Expungements: The legal process known as an expungement essentially "erases" an arrest or conviction from a person's criminal record. Expunges are regulated by state law.
• White Collar Crimes: Just because a criminal offense does not involve allegations of physical violence, that does not mean you should not take the charges seriously. Many white collar crimes like counterfeiting, embezzlement, fraud, and forgery carry penalties that are just as severe--if not more so--than crimes of violence.
