Judge Thad Balkman of the Cleveland County District Court has ordered Johnson and Johnson to pay more than half a billion dollars in damages for their part in Oklahoma’s opioid crisis. Although the shocking figure fell short of the $17 billion that prosecutors were seeking, the funds will pay for twelve months of addiction treatment, rehabilitation, and other treatment services for Oklahoma residents who’ve been affected by opioids.
Most of us know Johnson and Johnson for their baby products, Band-Aids, and gentle soaps, however, the ruling found that the company used “false, misleading, and dangerous marketing campaigns” toward doctors and patients to promote their opioids as safe and effective; a ploy that led to high addiction rates and even babies being born exposed to opioids.
The company, which supplied 60% of the ingredients that were used to create drugs like Oxycodone and the fentanyl patch, must now pay their debt to the Oklahoma residents whose families they’ve affected.
Oklahoma has suffered heavily from the opioid crisis. Thankfully this ruling is a step in the right direction toward rehabilitation and recovery for many Oklahoma residents.

In late August, the Oklahoma City Public School District announced that it will participate in the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Program for the 2019-2020 school year. This means that all of its 45,000 students will enjoy free breakfast and free lunch each day that school is in session.
Superintendent Sean McDaniel explains that “providing each child a nutritious and well- balanced meal gives students a better opportunity to succeed academically and athletically”. Research shows that students who consume a nutritious breakfast and lunch on a daily basis show higher attendance rates, exude better behavior, and perform better in school.
This means that Oklahoma City schools are taking steps to improve the lives of their students, while filling their bellies. For more information, visit the Oklahoma City Public School District’s website.

Did you know that in Colorado, its illegal for someone to put a couch or any type of upholstered seating arrangement in their own outdoor area?! Yes, you read that right: you can’t keep a couch or upholstered chair in any outdoor area on your own property.
The law originated from the city of Boulder’s attempts to stop the University of Colorado from burning couches. Though noble, it’s kind of unfair to restrict someone’s seating arrangement on their one property, don’t you think?
