In these unprecedented times where over 95% of the country is under Stay at Home Orders, life, as we know it, has changed (at least for the time being). In these times, many households across the country have suffered economic loss through either layoffs or slowed business. With bills still coming in, but work slow or non-existent, there’s no doubt that stress levels are on the rise. To make matters worse, stay at home orders and the closure of many non-essential businesses across the country has given many Americans "caged bird syndrome", which, in turn, has caused stress and domestic violence cases to soar. Combatting stress levels, some states like California and Colorado have deemed cannabis dispensaries as "essential" and allowed such businesses to remain open during this pandemic.
While both states boast relaxed recreational and medicinal marijuana laws, more states around the country have also allowed cannabis dispensaries to remain in business during this time. Joining California and Colorado are Alaska, Washington, and Oregon, along with Nevada, Illinois, and Michigan, all of which allow for recreational cannabis usage and have allowed dispensaries to remain open when all other non-essential businesses have been ordered to close. Dispensaries in California and Colorado have seen a spike of up to 159% in sales due to more and more residents turning to cannabis to combat stress and tension.
In comparison, the state of Oklahoma has also deemed cannabis dispensaries as "essential" but because of state laws, which only allow for the use of cannabis with a medical card, Oklahoma residents without a prescription are left to seek out other stress relievers. However, all hope is not lost. According to a recent interview with Gov. Kevin Stitt, thanks to the damaging economical effects of COVID-19, the state of Oklahoma is facing a $400 million revenue loss for the 2020 fiscal year. Paired with rock bottom fuel prices, which also drive Oklahoma’s economy, Gov. Stitt is looking for other methods of income, and recreational marijuana is a source of income that he is considering. Data says that the implementation of recreational marijuana sales could bring the state an extra $100 million per year, so there is a glimmer of hope for Oklahoma residents. Until then, Oklahoma residents are left to find their own stress-relieving outlets.
