As you probably already know, Oklahoma is a gun-friendly state. We have less- restrictive laws than other parts of the United States. With the proper permit, you may carry a handgun either openly or concealed, a law which took effect in November of 2012.

In February 2019, Governor Kevin Stitt signed a bill that makes way for constitutional carry, a law that allows some individuals over the age of 21 to be able to carry a firearm on their person without a permit. The bill also states that if you are over the age of 18, and are an active duty member of the military or National Guard, (or have been honorably discharged), you too can carry a firearm. Leaving in place the previous locations that people could not carry weapons, such as public buildings and businesses, the bill would see that firearm-carrying laws still set clear boundaries.

Additionally, the bill maintains current protections. For example, it allows private property owners to prohibit firearms from being carried onto their property, regardless of the constitutional carry law. The bill also maintains the ability for higher education institutions to set their own policies regarding the carrying of firearms on their campuses.

Although the decision has caused concern and intense debate on both sides of the aisle, lawmakers do not expect a increase in violence with the bill’s passing. Training and proper gun handling is left at the discretion and responsibility of the gun owner.

There are still a number of restrictions on who can carry a firearm under the new constitutional carry law. For example, convicted felons, adjudicated juveniles, persons on probation, persons subject to a VPO, and others may still be legally prohibited from owning or possessing a firearm. Perspective is everything. Sometimes we can be so miserable in our own circumstances while the next person would give up their life to have our problems and live in our shoes. Sometimes, it takes us losing everything to realize how blessed we are, problems and all. So many times we complain about inconveniences, mishaps, and minor hiccups when a little gratitude can completely change our lives. Here are three easy ways to express more gratitude, and watch your life get a little brighter with each day.

1. Make it a Habit — Make your gratitude a habit. Every day, think of one thing that you can be grateful for. Whether it’s your family, your job, life, health, or strength, you have something you can be grateful for.
2. Find Something Each Day to be Grateful For — Every day, find something to be grateful for. This step is a little different than the first. Find something that happened today that you can be grateful for. If your parking meter already had time on it when you arrived, or if you made it to work on time today without an accident, be grateful.
   Be Aware of Complaints — Once you recognize all the blessings that surround you each day, you’ll start to recognize not only your complaints, but the complaints of those around you. Be sure to stifle your complaints and the complaints of those around you, as they can easily drown out the gratitude that you’ve begun to recognize each day.
